Have you heard about Big Eyes??

Hey Hey,

So….. I wanted to talk to you all about movies! Yep! That is right… MOVIES!
Why? Because as an artist, I still enjoy a movie now and then, although I am mostly captivated by those silly reality TV shows. You know the ones you really should not watch, but can’t stop? Yes…. Those!

When I ask people what genre of movie they enjoy, I usually get action, comedy, horror etc. Trust me, I do enjoy a good comedy, or romance every once in a while, but my favourite movies are full of art, music, dance. These movies I can watch over and over, without fail. I LOVE The Sound of Music, Dirty Dancing, Big Eyes, oh the list goes on!

Speaking of art, and movies, have any of you seen Big Eyes? It is a captivating movie about Margaret Keane. An artist in California who spent all her time locked in a room painting, and her second husband spent all his time taking the money and the credit.

In her own words….

quote-for-many-years-i-had-allowed-my-second-husband-to-take-credit-for-my-paintings-but-one-margaret-keane-111-47-15.jpg

As an artist myself, I could not imagine having anyone take credit for my work, let alone my own husband. It is just cruel.

One of my favourite actors, Amy Adams, play Margaret in Big Eyes. She does a wonderful job depicting the hurt Margaret felt, yet you could feel the passion for what she was doing. The movie had some intense moment, and really hit your own emotions. When my brother, who was 11 at the time, and really has no interest in art, enjoyed it, you know it is a good movie! I highly recommend checking it out!

It was in college, when I was taking Fine Art, that I first learnt about Margaret and her Big Eyes paintings. It is amazing how you get a sense of what these children are feeling, just from how she painted them. She is incredible at capturing emotions. I have not come across a painting of hers that I do not like. The detail, the brush strokes, what she is able to capture… Truly Amazing!

Check out a few for yourself…..

Are they not amazing??? I know not all will agree, but I can not get over how gorgeous each one is!

A Path to Discovery!

Hey Hey!

I am so excited to be back and writing to you about my journey to art!
Art was never something that I had considered as a career, but was always something that I enjoyed growing up. If I was not out playing road hockey with the boys, I was in the play room colouring, painting, and crafting.

When I began high school I started to take art more seriously, I took every course I could and averaged in the 90’s for them all, I even got honour roll! It was then that I decided that being an artist would be my path. Nothing made me happier!

I knew that to continue what I loved it would take practice, patience and hard work. It was a long process deciding what artistic direction I wanted to take after high school! I loved painting, drawing and all the Fine Art aspects, but I also enjoyed Photography.  When it came time to apply for college I choose three courses; Photography, Fine Art and Interior Design. In the end, and let me tell you there was a lot of debate, I chose Fine Art.

I spent 3 years in college learning various forms of art, as well as art history, Those three years were not easy, and by year 3 I was ready to be done with school. I was tired, frustrated and could not stand being told where I should take my artistic direction when it was supposed to be about me building my portfolio. When I graduated in June of 2012, I spent time away from art, painting etc, but boy did I miss it.

In November 2012, I took a leap of faith and opened my own art business. I honestly did not know much about what direction I was going to take this business, or how to run a business in general. I began to research, join groups, follow other artists on Facebook and advertise.

It has bee quite the journey, at almost 6 years in, I have had some really great years, and some really bad ones, but I would not change it for the world. I love what I do, I love watching the images come to life with each stroke of my paint brush. I love hearing the stories and connecting with others. It is my way of helping people, my way of bringing a smile to someones face each and every day.

Until next time!
